Do you wish you had a magic wand?

Wouldn’t it be great to flick your wrist, spout some Latin, and bewitch your problems away?

How tidy that would be.

How terrible.

You know what happens in fairy tales when someone goes after something, but doesn’t want to work for it?

You know what I’m talking about – the tales with a good, hardworking girl and one or two lazy stepsisters.

The good girl falls down a well, encounters talking animals or apples or bread that beg her to help them, so she does. She is rewarded.

The lazy girl tries to replicate this process, but doesn’t want to get her hands dirty. She is decidedly NOT rewarded.

Your magic needs the work of your hands.

Your magic needs your mess.

If you’re anything like, oh, the entire rest of the world, you probably hate feeling like a mess.

But let me tell you – magic comes from a mess, and magic needs you to make a mess.

If you didn’t have a mess, why would you need magic?

Magic clears away evil messes, and it can bring in light and love to fill the void.

Magic is a sacred art. Magic is THE sacred art.

And if you had an art teacher like I did, who got angry if our crayons were still pointy at the end of class, you know that art is messy, too.

Art is messy. Magic is messy.

And at the end, you’ve made something.

I hope that you’ve experienced the feeling of a good mess.

Kneeling in the garden, your hands in the soil, rooting around in green tangled life.

Standing in the kitchen, your hands in the flour, kneading soft sustenance.

Locked in the studio, paint on your nose and your pants and your shoes, under your fingernails, everywhere.

Smiling.

Creating.

Happy in the mess.

Magic can be like that, too.

It’s powdery. Oily. Waxy. Dirty. Messy.

Wonderful.

what a magic mess!

Inside of us there is something wonderful happening. Do you feel the groove? Do you feel the churning of your old shit being dug up and turned over and slowly turned into healthy compost to feed your healthy growth? It’s happening. Sometimes it feels weird but right now, we are in this amazing place where we can really listen to our intuition and our inner guidance. I had the strangest experience today of walking down the street with an intended destination and being strongly guided by something inside me to go the total opposite way. I didn’t want to – I wanted to go work in my favorite cafe and be online and probably waste a lot of time surfing the web. Instead I was led around the block, to a restaurant where I almost ordered an “EYE-OPENER” sandwich but instead used the bathroom and went to a totally different cafe/chocolate shop without wifi. And here I am, having followed my guidance at each turn of the road, getting things done that I never would have worked on if I hadn’t listened to that voice of knowing, that urge of certainty. Listen. Let your creativity out, and be open to doing it in unusual ways. Things are changing for the better, but construction sites always look like total chaos until suddenly there is something wonderful and new in place where once there was dirt and bits of old twisted metal. That’s your insides right now. They look like a mess but it’s because something new and wonderful is coming into being. It can bring up unexpected stuff so be aware, be on your guard, and don’t suppress it. Let it out. Give it a try. Trust yourself, darlingheart.

And that’s magic.
